In a rural spot surrounded by a superb garden, bluebell woods, hay meadows and wildlife, on a quiet no-through lane used mostly by walkers and horses, sits a lovely 500-year-old Cumbrian longhouse and two cottages attached, which Sarah (a horticulturist) and Stewart have carefully renovated.

Both Crumble Cottage and Upper Crumble are fresh, airy, open-plan spaces painted in soft colours, with small-pane windows, wood shutters, thick walls and old beams. You get a basket of logs for the wood-burner, cosy rugs, comfy sofas and a galley kitchen with all you need. Up tiny carpeted stairs are bedrooms with big comfy beds and linen as light as air. If you stay at Upper Crumble you can book the Hot Tub Courtyard. Both cottages are featured in Alastair Sawdays a Special Place to Stay in the Just for Two and Gardens Collections.
Ask to be shown around the ancient walled vegetable garden with bee boles, orchards (for crumbles, of course), topiary and herbaceous borders.  For guests interested in wildlife and bird watching the new water garden and wildflower meadows are a real treat.
